We scrutinized the veracity of mothers' claims concerning IYCF counseling guidance obtained through community-based engagement, while also evaluating the aspects influencing the reliability of these assertions.
A rigorous assessment of IYCF counseling was achieved by directly observing home visits in 40 Bihar villages by community workers, contrasted with mothers' reports gathered during two-week follow-up surveys (n=444 mothers with children less than one year; observations were directly linked to the interview data). This study sought to investigate the relationship between maternal dietary quality during gestation and offspring hepatic fat levels in early childhood (median age 5 years, range 4 to 8 years).
In the Colorado-based, longitudinal Healthy Start Study, data were obtained from 278 mother-child sets. Mothers provided monthly 24-hour dietary recalls throughout their pregnancies (median of 3 recalls, with a range of 1 to 8 recalls starting after enrollment), which were then used to calculate their typical nutrient consumption and dietary patterns, including the Healthy Eating Index-2010 (HEI-2010), Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), and Relative Mediterranean Diet Score (rMED). MRI was used to determine the level of hepatic fat in offspring during early childhood. Using linear regression models, we examined the relationships between maternal dietary predictors during pregnancy and offspring log-transformed hepatic fat, while accounting for offspring demographics, maternal/perinatal confounders, and maternal total energy intake.
Maternal fiber consumption during pregnancy, along with rMED scores, showed a correlation with reduced offspring hepatic fat levels in early childhood, even after accounting for other factors. Specifically, a 5 gram increase in fiber per 1000 kcal of maternal diet was linked to a 17.8% decrease in offspring hepatic fat (95% CI: 14.4%, 21.6%), while a 1 standard deviation increase in rMED was associated with a 7% decrease in offspring hepatic fat (95% CI: 5.2%, 9.1%).
